When an old lady is murdered in her house in Oxford, her body is discovered by two men who meet for the first time at that moment: Arthur Seldom, a prestigious professor of logic who has written a recent book on the link between mathematics and serial killers, and Martin, a young graduate student who has just arrived at the university hoping to study with Seldom. nIt quickly becomes clear that this is more than an isolated incident, as the killer continues his series of murders, each heralded by a mathematical clue in an anonymous note to Seldom. Professor and student join forces to try and crack the code and thus begins an elaborate puzzle, in which every action has an effect beyond anything that Martin could have imagined.
